Throughout our journey towards organics, we’ve had a couple of questions that have (and continue to) pop up every so often.
They tend to fall into the sceptic category and are often variations of the following:
- Are Organics really worth all the hype?
- Why are Organics so much more expensive when compared to their conventional counterparts?
- Are Organics really better for me? Really?
- Why would the supermarkets be feeding us poison anyway? Clearly these are fearmongering tactics!
- If GMOs are really that bad for us, why would the government allow us to be fed them?
- And last but not least – my grandparents never purchased organics and they seemed to have done just fine thank you very much.
Now, what all these arguments highlight is one very pertinent issue – a lack of awareness around what the organic concept actually entails.
And, like most solutions around a lack of awareness, education is the only way to either support or disprove your personal stance on the whole organic concept – whichever side you may find yourself aligned with.
So, without much further ado, let’s get down to some good old myth busting!
Are Organics worth all the hype?

Now this is a loaded question.
Loaded because, and this is not a cop out, it depends on what side of the spectrum you find yourself on.
At Nim-Véda Australia, we make no secret about our obsessive adoration for Organic and Natural based options when it comes to our personal care and food requirements so for us, this is a no brainer, of course they are!
However, for many of the sceptics out there, organics are nothing but a well devised PR plan that has made businesses a good wholesome profit – i.e. so not deserving of their fake hype.
How do we reach some sort of consensus on this topic?
By being as transparent as we can at the time of writing this comprehensive article, that’s how!
As of yet, though there is a considerable amount of supporting evidence on the many and varied benefits of organic foods and products, there is no actual documented evidence that organic foods are better for us. For that to happen we may need to wait a couple of decades to see the health results of someone who has had a predominantly organic diet versus someone who hasn’t and we’re not sure about you, but we’re not too keen on waiting on the results to see how sick someone gets in 50 years! Because clearly, for somethings in life. it can actually be too late.
Now, remember that bit where we mentioned that there’s a lot of supporting evidence for how great organics can be for us?
If you want some more information, then read on.
Organics uses less of the stuff that’s not meant to be used according to Nature.
Our food and products aren’t meant to contain pesticides even if the usage of them means we don’t have to worry about nasty looking insects. Our food and products aren’t meant to contain pesticides even if the usage of them means we don’t have to worry about nasty looking insects. Click To Tweet
In our opinion, we’d rather nasty looking natural insects over pesticides, synthetics and other unnatural chemical laden food and products we can’t see that are actually nasty and possibly poisoning us slowly from the inside.
Organics take their time.

Organic livestock and plant based materials are allowed to mature the way Mother Nature always intended by taking their time. Livestock, in particular, are not given growth hormones, antibiotics/other medication or GMO food before they get on our dining tables.
In extreme cases, non-organic livestock may never see the light of day in their lives (literally) never being allowed to graze or reap the benefits of the outdoors..
Organics are probably fresher.

Who can argue with fresher produce being better for us and our family?
Seriously, probably a very small proportion of us (so small, you probably wouldn’t be able to see their demographic sliver on a pie chart!).
As organics tend to steer clear of the pesticide route, they have to be sold and consumed faster than their non-organic counterparts, so chances are you and your family are using and consuming them a lot faster than their non-organic alternatives.
Organic Farming Protects Nature.
Organic Farming works with Nature rather than against her making it a lot better for the environment. When farmers use organic procedures, chances are they are reducing pollution, energy consumption and soil erosion while increasing soil fertility and conserving water. As natural forms of produce protection are used (such as the use of naturally found Neem), there is an added layer of protection for natural wildlife and people who live close to farms.
Okay, this has been mentioned before but it’s so important …
It deserves a second mention! Organically raised livestock are not given antibiotics, animal by products (which is completely unnatural and in many cases unethical – such as when naturally occurring omnivores are given animal matter and carnivores are fed their own kind!) or growth hormones. The consumption of animal by products is known to increase the risk of mad cow disease while antibiotic usage can often create strains of antibiotic resistance bacteria which can be passed onto humans.
Organic Meat and Dairy are richer in some nutrients.
A 2016 European study has displayed that organic meat and milk contained nutrients that were up to 50% higher when compared to their conventional counterparts. These nutrients included the ever imperative omega fatty acids as well.
Organic Produce is free of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
Also commonly referred to as Genetically Engineered produce, GMOs laden produce are foods that have had their DNA altered via science in ways that do not naturally occur in Nature or via traditional forms of crossbreeding.
This is done by big companies in order to be resistant to normally, natural occurring pests.
GMOs are often found in many of the foods that we consume, found easily at our local supermarkets, such as in many breakfast cereals we and our families eat every morning to the processed foods a large proportion of us have every night for dinner! GMOs are also commonly found in vegetables and fruits such as zucchini, canola, papaya, squash and soybeans – just to mention a few!
The prolonged use of noted toxic herbicides such as Glyphosate (often referred to as Roundup) has increased by 15 times since GMOs came into unfashionable fashion. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has gone on record to state that glyphosate is likely carcinogenic to us even though there is still some controversy surrounding the exact level of health risks posed by the use of pesticides in our diet.
GMOs have been associated with an increase of gastro intestinal issues and food allergens in human beings. Even though many food safety advocates strongly believe that interfering with the DNA of an animal or plant can increase the risk of cancer, so far research has proven inconclusive.
Even though no long term analysis concerning the safety of GMOs has been conducted, some animal studies have displayed that eating GMOs may cause considerable internal organic damage as well as potentially thickening the digestive tract and slowing normal brain growth.
Our Increased Risks when we consume Pesticides in Non-Organic Products
Prolonged exposure to pesticides can lead to numerous health issues including birth defects, headaches alongside increased strain on already compromised immune systems, to mention a few.
Some studies have revealed that even when consumed in small amounts, pesticides may increase the risk of certain cancers such as brain tumors, lymphoma, breast and prostate cancer and leukaemia.
Foetuses and children are most at risk of health issues related to pesticide usage as their brains, bodies and immune systems are still developing, and may result in developmental delays, autism, motor dysfunction, immune system compromise and other behavioural disorders.
Pregnant women are also more at risk because of the increased stress pesticide exposure may cause on already overworked organs and harmful material is easily passed from mother to child through breast milk and even while in the womb.
Furthermore, the widespread distribution of pesticides has also fuelled the creation of super bugs and super weeds which can only be destroyed through the use of extremely poisonous toxins such as Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid.
How you can make Organics Affordable
Many of the naysayers claim that consuming and using organic products is an unrealistic expectation placed on a majority of people who are doing it tough, but this is not entirely true!
Though Organic products are often more expensive when compared to their nonorganic peers, the higher price tag is often a result of a couple of issues Organic producers’ battle with daily including:
- Growing Organic produce is often more labour intensive since farmers are using organic methods that are harder to comply with in the modern age.
- Obtaining organic certification is expensive
- Feeding livestock organic produce can often cost twice as much!
- Organic farms are more often than not, smaller in comparison to conventional farms, so fixed overhead and other costs are distributed across smaller produce areas without government grants and subsidies.

Vegetables and fruits are freshest and most affordable when they are in season. This is great news for those of us who like a bit of variety in our diet. Eating seasonal produce doesn’t just taste better either, it’s actually better for us. By consuming what Nature provides us with so bountifully when in season, we are actually ensuring that we are eating and feeding our loved ones all the good, wholesome nutrients, vitamins and minerals our body needs at the time considering the viruses that are abundant during these ever-changing seasons and after all, who are we to argue with Mother Nature anyway?
This should convert even that loudest Critic!

All in all, never have organics been more intriguing to the general public on a global scale. This is (among many reasons) due to the revolutionary resurgence in the not so revolutionary concept of alternative medicine via more traditional forms of natural healing many of our ancestors used in their day – such as the traditional medicines of Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Western Medicinal herbs, to mention a few.
Food plays a significant role in preventative medication and in some cases, even as a complementary cure to allopathic medicine for many of the issues that affect modern mankind.
Mother Nature has always been abundantly giving by her very nature and many of us are returning to her wise ways to take care of the body that she created in the very first place!
